How to identify scam phone calls and or SMS
What is a scam phone call and SMS?
Telephone-based scam callers are becoming more frequent in today’s society. Most of us have received a call from someone claiming they are from the ATO, Federal police or other popular large organisations.
These callers will try and make you feel like you have done something wrong or there is some urgent action to be taken by you to prevent you being in trouble, when you are really not. Callers have tried to get people to download programs on their PC’s or even their mobile phones like ANYDESK or TEAMVIEWER. These programs give these scam callers remote access to your PC or mobile phone so they can navigate your sensitive information on these devices.
At times they may also ask you to pay for a fine or deposit money into a bank account.
Scam SMS are quite frequent today with many people receiving random SMS’s from numbers they are not familiar with.
These SMS’s will make you feel like urgent action is required such as; you need to pay a toll notice as your device never registered or your delivery needs further information. Generally these SMS’s will have a link in the message which will take you to an unsecure website asking for financial and personal information.
Remember, it is very rare that any organisation requires you to enter financial or personal information via SMS, so if you do receive one of these SMS’s, it is more than likely a scam.
Things that should raise alarm bells:
- Calls from random numbers which you are not familiar with.
- Calls from people claiming your NBN is at fault when you haven’t even logged a fault on your service.
- People calling and claiming they need your financial details for whatever reason.
- Callers who want you to download a program on any of your devices.
- Callers seeking any personal information from you and you are not familiar with them or their organisation.
- Callers seeking payment for an urgent unpaid fine.
- Callers claiming they are from the ATO seeking payment and personal details.
- SMS that requires you to enter in personal information.
- SMS that requires you to make a payment.
What you can do if you have received a Scam call or SMS:
If you feel you or anyone else in your business has received a Scam call or SMS , we ask you to not provide any sensitive or personal information to these callers or put this information on any unfamiliar websites. Callers claiming they are from large organisations like the ATO or Federal police, you should call these organisations back on their main contact numbers to assess if the call is legitimate or not.
